A Look at Googles Cloud Jobs API and Larger Impact for Recruiting Job Seekers - Workology
A Look at Googles Cloud Jobs API and Larger Impact for Recruiting Job Seekers - Workology What Does Googles Cloud Jobs API Offer Employers? Yesterday, Google announced the CloudJobs API. The product is currently in Alpha, available to a limited number of applicant tracking systems, job boards and career sites. Their solution is welcome during a time where job seekers are increasingly challenged with finding relevant job postings that suit their specific experiences and needs. There is nothing worse than visiting a job board or aggregator and not receiving relevant job postings or, even worse, postings that are active but not recent listings. Having just wrapped up a project involving job posting process and optimization, I can attest to how complicated and challenging developing appropriate job posting content can be. Job postings are typically boring, filled with corporate speak and often serve as a formal job description instead of serving as a long form advertisement inviting candidates to not only apply for the job in question but learn about the organization as well as make the decision against the job opportunity. For employers, companies are challenged with finding qualified talent for their current job openings. Candidates are applying in droves for roles on company career sites, job aggregators and job boards. According to a report from the National Federation of Independent Business, in October 2016, 48% of small businesses reported a shortage of qualified workers to fill job openings. Additionally, 28% of small businesses could not fill open jobs. The key here is qualified. Whether its small businesses or high volume industries like retail, restaurant or hospitality where application volumes remain high, time to fill is increasing. People are applying in large numbers. They just arent qualified, making it increasingly challenging to hire effectively and efficiently. What Does Googles Cloud Jobs API Offer Employers? Googles Machine Learning technology seeks to solve the following problems that exist within the hiring process: Better candidate to job posting and position match. There is nothing worse than searching for a specific job position like human resources manager and being suggested positions that include those keyword combinations but have nothing to do with the job title Im searching for. The hope is that Google Cloud Jobs could eliminate this confusion providing a more relevant and smarter search than what job seekers currently receive. Improved job suggestions. One of the secrets of the job board industry is that behind the scenes they buy and sell traffic, postings and candidates, which is why sometimes job seekers often receive strange recommendations for jobs based on the experience they have provided on their profiles. For example, I regularly receive job alert emails from a number of job boards for the position executive administrative assistant or inside sales professional. For the job boards themselves this is a numbers game. They know through experience that 1-2% of candidates might click and ultimately apply for those openings and the logic is that increasing the number of job alerts sent to a wider audience would increase the number of applies and revenue. Googles new product changes that. Levels the playing field in the job board industry. For most of us operating career sites Indeed provides a large percentage of referral traffic. Indeed and other aggregators like them are SEO ninjas focused on their results in search. Companies with career sites, including employers, RPOs and staffing agencies, necessarily focused on SEO, which is why many of us are paying for featured postings and enhanced job results. Googles new Jobs API product could help re-invigorate the job board industry, level the playing field when it comes to Indeed and increase career site traffic because of the enhancements offered to select ATS companies. What It Doesnt Do Doesnt change existing job posting search algorithms and ranking process on Google Doesnt offer a stand alone product for employers Doesnt offer job posting enhancement and SEO suggestions Doesnt have any case studies to back up their claims Googles Cloud Job API is Brilliant Because. Google isnt joining the HR Technology game, but it is providing a technology to enhance HR technology products. This is so much smarter than Google launching a job board as Chris Russell and I discussed earlier this year on the Workology Podcast. They arent creating a job board to complete with an already active, mature and crowded space, but rather providing technology using their expertise for current and future players to elevate their current job board and career site solutions. The increased growth in HR technology combined with the war for talent has perfectly positioning Google to offer a solution for all parties involved at different intervals, while being able to maintain their Google AdWords product where I believe an increasing number of employers and their agencies are spending recruiting dollars, as they move towards a progammatic job posting and recruitment strategy. Googles entry into the industry disrupts the job board industry greatly because job boards and staffing agencies alike have been challenged with being penalized by search engine algorithm and ranking like Googles, due to duplicate content in the form of job postings on multiple websites. Companies like Broadbean were created with the sole purpose of making it easy to publish a single job posting on multiple job boards. Unfortunately, Google doesnt like duplicate content which has impacted all job boards and career sites including Indeed, who earlier this year began suspending career site feeds that published duplicate job posting content. This change decreased organic traffic, forcing companies to re-evaluate their job posting efforts. That has generally resulted in either paying for sponsored jobs through aggregators like Indeed or taking the painstaking time and effort to customize every single job post, which, for organizations like RPOs and staffing agencies, is extremely expen sive and time consuming. If only Google also created a machine learning and artificial intelligence technology that re-wrote job postings and descriptions! What Talent Acquisition Teams Can Do Because Googles Cloud Jobs API is only available for partners that are ATS, job boards and career site provides, corporate HR and talent acquisition teams will need to work with their agencies, job boards and ATS companies if they want to be some of the first to test and work through the new offerings. At present, Dice, CareerBuilder and Jibe are promoted as Alpha partners. Personally, I would have liked to see an HR technology neutral community like Direct Employers be added to the initial list. Then again, Google is in the money making and revenue generating business, and it will be interesting to see how this move impacts LinkedIn, Indeed and Glassdoor. The majority of Silicon Valley giants have entered or are influencing the HR technology industry even Facebook who last week launching their jobs feed to their Pages. As long as the economy holds, 2017 is shaping up to be an even more interesting year, shining a bright spotlight on the importance of talent and human resources. You can click here to learn more about the Alpha program and make a suggestion for your ATS, career site provider or favorite job board to join.

MVP Slugger's Attitude Provides 3 Career Lessons MVP Slugger's Attitude Provides 3 Career Lessons MVP Slugger's Attitude Provides 3 Career Lessons I'm a fanatic Red Sox fan, a some time ago lenient aficionado of a baseball crew that was ordinarily cursed - and at times confused - as its continued looking for a World Series title. Be that as it may, thanks in no little part to slugger Manny Ramirez, the Sox changed their fortunes and won the Series in 2004, and again in 2007. Manny at times had a leeway disposition about his obligations to the group. For quite a while, we ignored it as Manny being Manny. In any case, in 2008, the most important player in the 2004 Series had stayed around too long in Boston, and he was exchanged to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The conditions paving the way to and following his exchange offer three significant vocation exercises. Exercise 1: You may have loads of ability, however on the off chance that you can't cooperate with other people, your supervisors won't be cheerful. Manny was a hitting machine. His essence in the Sox arrangement puzzled contradicting administrators and baffled restricting pitchers. Be that as it may, he likewise disappointed his colleagues and the executives by not giving 100% in certain games, and asking out of others, eminently one game in 2008 against the archrival New York Yankees. The Sox lost that game, just as 4 of the following 5 preceding the exchange. After the exchange, it was accounted for that group the board said the majority of Manny's partners were tired and felt he expected to go. The Sox at that point went out and won 7 of their next 10 games. What it Means to You: One individual's awful mentality can contrarily influence a whole group. Employing directors may respect your whiz ability and achievements, yet many will choose somebody with less ability who may have a superior fit with the association and its way of life. That is the reason you might be met by something other than the employing director before an offer is expanded. Exercise 2: Don't diss your manager as you exit the entryway, or a while later. In his last days in Boston, Manny shouted out against group the executives, including the vital proprietor, John Henry. Individuals have long recollections, and on the off chance that they happen to overlook, the games media will remind them. Manny turned into a free specialist after the 2008 season and expected to arrange another agreement for 2009. His history of insulting administration may have driven a few groups to avoid him. What it Means to You: If, in a meeting for another position, you talk adversely of a previous boss or chief, it can neutralize you. Recruiting administrators may think, If this individual talks this much refuse about his old chief, what's to prevent him from doing likewise on the off chance that they leave my organization? Furthermore, with businesses progressively scouring the web to vet possible new representatives, any tirades about previous supervisors or bosses that you leave on a blog or gathering that can be followed back to you will set off an alert in the employing director's head. Exercise 3. At the point when you start a new position, establish a solid first connection. Like the Red Sox, the Dodgers needed to make it to the World Series in October. They exchanged for Manny in light of the fact that they accepted his hitting abilities would assist them with arriving. In his initial six games as a Dodger, he didn't frustrate, hitting a white-hot .565 and belting four grand slams. (In his last six games with the Sox, he hit just .261 with one grand slam.) What it Means to You: Sometimes a difference in landscape, for example, a new position, can draw out your best. In case you're troubled where you are and don't see anything changing that can improve your mind-set, you might be in an ideal situation in an occupation that can revive you and offer you a superior chance to develop your vocation. In reality, there are a couple of workers who pull off Manny-like conduct, yet that is once in a while the sort of conduct recruiting supervisors search for when it's an ideal opportunity to fill a vacant position. In this way, assist them with seeing that you not just have what it takes and experience to exceed expectations at the specific employment, ensure they see that you're likewise a deferential cooperative person who carries on like a genuine expert. What other vocation exercises would you be able to get from proficient competitors? Offer your perspectives with us.

Career Coach Advice Beware of the Golden Handcuffs - Hallie Crawford
Profession Coach Advice Beware of the Golden Handcuffs I was on a gathering training call and one of the members stated, Recall, the brilliant binds just get more tight. I'd never heard this, yet it is so evident! From that point forward I've heard it on many occasions from customers. They're stuck in a vocation as a result of the significant pay or the advantages. They have constructed a way of life around those things and don't have the foggiest idea whether they can surrender them. It can feel like a jail sentence, since you're remaining for an inappropriate reasons. Try not to misunderstand me: a compensation and advantages are beneficial things. The awful thing is the point at which we feel caught as opposed to having a sense of safety and cheerful about them. Nobody likes to feel as such. It's actual one individual can feel caught in an occupation while another can feel enabled and satisfied in that equivalent employment. At last it's tied in with being at decision. You may think about how this is unique in relation to Tip 3: Don't settle. In any case, it is. Brilliant binds become an integral factor when you've taken a vocation you think you'll like and afterward remain there essentially on account of the advantages. Try not to settle is about not taking work in any case when your gut response says, Run for the closest entryway. Angela was in pharmaceutical deals. She disclosed to me it appeared as though every time her organization detected their reps were getting miserable at work, it gave them an advantage to add to their advantages portfolios: another mobile phone, a little reward, another organization vehicle. It's not to express these things all by themselves are terrible you may be saying,Hey, these things sound incredible! Does Job Hiring Slow Down in The Summer
Does Job Hiring Slow Down in The Summer Q: Ive been told that hiring slows down in the summer time. Is that true, and if so, how should I adjust my job search efforts so that my resume isnt getting lost in the shuffle? A: There is some truth to the rumor that, for many companies hiring slows down in the summer from June until the end of August. However, this is less about the needs of an organization slowing, or a seasonal hiring freeze going into effect. The simple truth is that many people take vacation time in the summer, and that often complicates the process of coordinating interviews, team meetings, and other administrative approvals needed to bring on a new hire. You might be tempted to wait until September to pick your search back up, in hopes that your resume wont get lost in the inbox of someone whos on vacay for the next 2 weeks. But I urge you to not let the summer act as an excuse to halt or even scale back on your search. If you need a job, waiting it out for 3 months isnt going to do you any favors, and companies are still hiring. In fact, it can be a great time to get your resume out there since everyone else is reacting to the supposed slump and theres potential for less competition. If youre concerned about the lack of momentum, and you have flexibility, you might consider using your time to focus on other beneficial career activities: Get your resume together anyway. If youre a passive job seeker, its easy to throw the task of updating your resume on the back burner until you have an immediate need/more time/more money. Even if youre not in a rush to apply to opportunities, embrace the summer slow down as the perfect time to tackle the task and make sure all of your personal branding ducks are in a row come September. Do some heavy networking. Summer is a great time to network and meet people. Theres no shortage of seasonal events, parties, and BBQs to mix and mingle with your industry peers. Use that exposure to your advantage. Thinking about looking for a new gig? Get out there and meet people, tell them that youre looking and what it is you do. Connections can be made when you least expect, so always be open. Hit the research. One of the reasons I consistently see people coming up short in their job search results is because theyre not clear on what theyre actually looking for, or whom they want to work for. Do some investigation work on different companies and get a sense of the type of company culture you want to be part of and how that allows you to do your best work. Stop applying to anything and everything that sounds like Sure, I can do this job⦠and figure out what your core skills and talents are that you bring to the table, what you like and dislike, and where can you use those to create value. Work on your interviewing skills. Having a stellar resume that gets you in the door for the interview is only half of the equation; you need to be able to sell yourself to the HR powers that be. Particularly if youve been off the job market for a while, youll want to spend some time practicing talking about yourself and telling your career story, communicating your skills and experience, what you did in your most recent role⦠and why youre leaving. Grab a friend for the afternoon and ask them to be your sounding board for feedback. Or hire an interviewing/career coach. Take inventory of your skills sets. Whats your next move? If its time to make a change and move up, start looking at job descriptions for the level above where you currently are and identify any skills or experience that you might be lacking. If theyre looking for expert proficiency in SalesForce and youre moderately familiar with it, jump on a subscription-based training site like Lynda.com or download a free software trial and toy around with it. Spending a few hours upping your level of skill could mean a $10-20K+ bump in your salary.

Experience the application yourself in the event that you have to and check whether you become weary of the drudgery before the end. With the customary recruiting process taking up to 45 days to fill a situation by and large, it's almost certain that the best and the most splendid will as of now be subsiding into another office across town in the event that you don't abbreviate your procedure. This is the reason it's imperative to accelerate the way toward transforming an incredible candidate into an extraordinary recruit. Maybe you have to get all the chiefs together to meet an incredible up-and-comer so you can choose to pivot a bid for employment quicker. Or on the other hand you should get a possibility to step through an exam to check whether they will be appropriate for the rigors of the activity. Video interviews are additionally an extraordinary method to cut a portion of the fat out of the conventional recruiting process. Both live and single direction video interviews permit managers to see up-and-comers quicker, assess them all the more by and by, and offer and record meets without any problem. Whatever technique your organization utilizes, ensure it's eliminating sat around that could lose you your fantasy up-and-comer. Why I Decided Not to Look for a Job From Outside Israel
Why I Decided Not to Look for a Job From Outside Israel 6 A man was making his weekly check with the unemployment office. âI think we have a job for you this week,â the manager said. âThere is an opening at the Eagle Laundry. Would you like to apply for it?â âI need a job real bad,â the man said, âbut I don't think they would hire me. I've never washed an eagle.â Perception vs. Reality The above is only a joke, but perhaps it reflects the reason why there is a perception that Israeli companies don't like to hire people still outside the country? Mind you, would they have taken that person if he was inside the country? Probably not, but, with a bit of luck, this would have come out in the interview. I work in the Information Technology (IT) department of the largest bank in Africa. Our family has taken the decision to move to Israel and one of the questions asked to me most often is âwhere are you going to work?â I can't answer that as âeveryone' I speak to in Israel tells me that it is a waste of time even applying for a job when you are not in Israel. I thought that they were not correct, so I started contacting potential employees. So Close Yet So Far The closest I got to what I felt was meaningful were two successive emails. The position offered was in Israel but I got the impression that the contact was based in America. He asked for my resume as I had a âglove fit' for the job. He then emailed me back and said âare you based in Israel?â I tried to work out how to say âyes' when the answer was clearly âno', given that the address in the resume was not in Israel and neither my current employer nor any of my previous ones were remotely near Israel. Not even in the same hemisphere, let alone the same continent. I thought of some philosophical answers like âcan one ever be truly away from Israel?â or âNot right now but offer me a job and I can get on a planeâ. I then remembered an old story and decided to rather be straight:eval Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Person asked a young Engineer fresh out of MIT, âAnd what starting salary were you looking for?â The Engineer said, âIn the neighborhood of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package.â The interviewer said, âWell, what would you say to a package of 5 weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, a company matching retirement fund for 50% of your salary, and a company car leased every 2 years- say, a red Corvette?â The Engineer sat up straight and said, âWow! Are you kidding?â And the interviewer replied, âYeah, but you started it.âeval Don't Worry Be Happy I wondered if it was even worthwhile doing any research before getting to Israel. I phoned the head of a recruitment organization and she was helpful. She said âsend your resumeâ. I replied that I had done so, four months before, and had not had any response. She implied that I could not have done so because they always respond. She suggested I re-send, which I did. I phoned again and she said my resume was fine and they would put it on file until, wait for it, I get to Israel. She said I should not worry about getting a job. The economy is fine and anyway, as a new oleh, you get a couple of months of pocket money. She also said that usually your first job does not work out, so you need to be prepared to keep looking for jobs even when you are in Israel and employed. Out of Africa A friend of mine is a dentist who gets bored sitting in Africa. He therefore contacts an agency in England and within no time gets a temporary position. He has been doing that for a few years. He has never met the agency and only meets his future employer when he arrives at the job. No questions like âare you in Englandâ or âare you really serious about coming to work here?â. They don't seem to mind that he is only trying to find a temporary position or that he may accept the job and just not pitch. I suppose it is because he is a dentist and that is different to the IT industry. Success Story In fact another dentist friend of mine got a call from a friend in Jerusalem about ten years ago. He said to her âBev, we have a job for you. If you get here within two months you can take it. If you don't, then I don't know if I can ever help you againâ. Bev had a slightly unusual domestic set up. Her husband, Martin, spent his time getting contracts in the Middle East to deliver yachts. He therefore disappeared for up to ten weeks sunbathing while she kept the home fires burning. I once said to him on his return âtough life!â, to which he replied âyes, but someone has to do itâ. Fortunately at the time Martin was at home so she told him about the offer. He replied that it was ridiculous, risky and foolhardy. How could they leave the comfort of home life with a stable income and go over to a new country with hardly any notice? She said to him that she was a dentist and a job is a job is a job, so what was the problem? They decided to take the plunge. Or maybe she decided to take the plunge while he was plunging overboard into the Mediterranean for a leisurely dip before dinner on the yacht? They had three children under the age of ten with one on the way. I spoke to them recently and they conceded that it probably was not a good decision, but things had worked out well so they were pleased with the move. The older children had battled for a bit and they had thought of coming back. They could not, however, as she had a job in Israel so what was the point of leaving? But Should You Even Try? On the subject of hiring someone from a different country, I am definitely sympathetic as there can be numerous challenges, one of them being different cultures. What if a person comes from somewhere where he tells numerous one liners and his work colleagues thinks he is really funny? Something like the following: A ragged piece of string went into a pub and asked for a drink. âAre you over 18?â asked the barman. âNo,â replied the string, âI'm a frayed knot.â I therefore decided to sit back and do nothing about a job until we get to Israel, but then I got an email from a colleague of mine. He does the same job as I and yet he has managed to set himself up with a new job long before he even decided to leave. How did he do it? He said he had put his resume on the Internet and was contacted by a recruitment agency that was looking to fill an international position. His resume was submitted and followed up with a Business Class flight and a three-day stay at the prospective employer all at their expense. And the rest is history. Oh yes, I forgot to add that the new job is in Kuwait. About the author Philip is based in South Africa while contemplating a job search in Israel. Twitter Keyword Targeting How Will It Help Recruiters
Twitter Keyword Targeting How Will It Help Recruiters âKeyword targetingâ are the two key words on everyoneâs lips at the moment this is of course in part to do with the fact that Twitter has only just recently launched their own keyword targeting marketing feature amid their own platform. The new feature poses exciting prospects for advertisers and marketers because it allows them to market products and services with loads more relevancy than ever before. In the context of Twitter, keyword targeting means that we will be able to reach users who are using specific keywords and phrases, combine this information with their location, device and even gender, and then send out relevant promoted tweets into their newsfeed. The feature also works to identify the appropriate tweets that users are engaging with. Twitterâs example of how it works: letâs say a user tweets about enjoying the latest album from their favorite band, and it so happens that band is due to play a concert at a local venue. That venue could now run a geotargeted campaign using keywords for that band with a Tweet containing a link to buy the tickets. That way, the user who tweeted about the new album may soon see that Promoted Tweet in their timeline letting them know tickets are for sale in their area. Of course keyword targeting is nothing new and Google have been offering the feature to advertisers for a while now, using the keywords from peopleâs searches, but for Twitter itâs the next big step in generating ad spend â" something the social media giant needs as it strives to profit from its massive user base. Keyword targeting and recruitment So as exciting as this concept seems to be for advertisers and marketers who are in quite a frenzy over it, what does it mean for us recruiters? Maybe not alot due to the limited time we have. As a social recruiter I can completely understand this discernment â" on top of our constant search for great candidates, our relationship building with clients and job posting and placement procedures, we have to find time to build online talent communities, write blogs, organise networking events and of course post tweets and updates ourselves. With the time it would take to set up yet another comprehensive campaign to run with Twitterâs keyword targeting service, I tend to agree that most recruiters will of course understand it, but just see it as nothing more than a ânice to haveâ. I also do not think that Twitter will be all that interested in promoting the feature for recruitment anyway. This is because generally recruitment advertising isnât a big enough spend. Twitter is already having to compete with the likes of Google and Facebook for the attention of big advertisers that are prepared to spend big, so possibly recruitment is just seen as a smaller fish thatâs not worth frying. Of course recruitment advertising across Google, Facebook and LinkedIn is in good stead â" we use ads across these platforms to great success already because they allow us to target and attract candidates who are unreachable through traditional channels. So if I donât decide to give Twitterâs keyword targeting a shot myself, I am definitely looking forward to hearing the results and feedback from the recruiters out there who donât think itâs going to be a waste of time. Like any new social-media ad platform, itâs absolutely worth being trialed and tested. And in this case there are actually great benefits to the feature that we havenât had access to before â" location, gender and device. Twitter says: Setting up a campaign to target keywords in the timeline is very similar to the setup process for search. Enter the keywords you want to target, choose whether you want to use phrase match or unordered keyword match, and specify your other targeting options such as geographic location, device and gender. What issues might it pose? Geographic location, device and gender of course the use of these words automatically alerts us to the issue of privacy. Twitter does encourage interaction and engagement, but could our candidates start to feel a little bit spooked if our promoted tweets are too tailored to the things they have been tweeting about? We all remember when Facebook ads first came out and were disturbingly too close to our personal lives. And using keyword targeting to advertise to potential candidates not only risks scaring them off with how much we apparently know about them, but if we tweet at them too much we also run the risk annoying them. Their feeds could potentially already be flooding with other promoted tweets from brands and companies, so to continue to see more impudent tweets about jobs could become exhausting. Perhaps it is in better taste to attract candidates by using the feature to share relevant industry news, information about events or articles of interest. Building our talent pool by being seen as helpful rather than a hindrance. If you have nothing necessary or helpful to tweet, then perhaps donât tweet at all.
